Fall Longhouse Roundup - Treasured Memories
The Native Sons and the Native Daughters held their respective Fall Longhouses over the past month. Almost 300 of our Dads and Daughters/Sons participated in our inaugural NSD Fall Longhouse. The great spirit granted us perfect camping weather and the girls responded with spirited competition throughout the day. An afternoon full of tribe site by tribe site trick or treating and outstanding pumpkin carving preceded the sacred fire walk. The walk was illuminated by the very pumpkins the girls had carved. The grossest pumpkin was awarded to Half Moon and the scariest pumpkin was awarded to Hopping Bunny.
A quick “Big How” to Silver Bear, who coordinated the first Pathfinders war games. The events included Frisbee target throwing, water balloon sling shot accuracy and the egg toss. The Pathfinders war games overall winner was Growling Bear - Evan Quirk.
The Native Sons got their chance to hold Longhouse and once again, the great spirit granted fantastic camping weather. A huge variety of war games greeted the boys; sling shot paint ball, golf, bow and arrows, bb guns, horse shoe toss, lawn darts, and the punt, pass and kick. Some of this year’s winners included: Apache Nation: Best Campsite, Tonkawa, Best Camper, Red Feather-Ethan Campbell, Critter Race champ, Coral Snake-Max Ketter, Ace Shooter, Eli Smith-Gold Bear (U8) and Chris Devine-Thunder Eagel (8+). This year’s PPK overall winner was White Buffalo-Cooper Dawson with a combined score of just under 200 total feet. The Algonquin Nation produced: Best Camp Site - Chippewa, Archery winner (U8) Blazing Cheetah and Red Fox (8+)
I strongly encourage all Big Braves to put your Spring Longhouse dates on your calendars early and commit to attending with your tribe. Longhouses are were you and your child can build and create Treasured Memories which will last a lifetime.

Citywide Pow-Wow
The Citywide Pow-Wow is our annual kick-off event and is being held at Conner's A-Maize-Ing Acres in Hilliard, FL on Saturday, October 1st, 2011. For those of you who wish to camp, you are welcome to come out to the 150-acre farm on Friday night after 4:00pm. There is no charge to camp overnight on Friday in our own private field, but there will be a $20 charge per family for playing on the farm all day Saturday.
There is a Corn Maize, a petting zoo area, hayrides, peddle go-carts, a corn dive, and much more, plus we will be setting up our bb-guns & archery range over by our exclusive Native Sons & Daughters area. Parking is free but please print out and use the attached directions and DO NOT use your GPS. This is coming from ol Chief Sparrowhawk firsthand because he almost wrecked his car going down a very rough dirt/mud road.
The entire family is welcome to attend, so bring mom, the grandparents and anyone who wants to come out. This will be a great time. There are all kinds of foods and refreshments to be bought on the farm, all locally made and prepared.
Please use the registration software to confirm your participation for the Citywide Pow-Wow. While there is no charge on the website to register, there is a charge of $20 per family that will be paid to the farm once you arrive that day.

Registration is Here! Please sign-up today!
Thanks to our Webspinner Shouting Tiger, our new registration software is up and running. Look to the far right of the toolbar above this message and click on it. Please register as soon as you can and join your tribe. By doing this, you will help with two things. The first is making certain everyone is set-up in the right tribe and our Federation is well organized. The second is money, which I will break down how that works.
Our National Dues to Native Sons & Daughters is $25 per family, and is a mandatory charge. This is important, as it covers us with the necessary insurances, your program patch, headband and handbook. Please make certain you enter the sponsoring parent/guardian and every child. You will be able to assign your kids to their tribes which are already preloaded in the system.
Second is our Federation Local Dues, which are $20 per person, and it is also a mandatory charge. Note that this is per person, so for example, if you are one father and one daughter, that will total to $40. This fee goes toward your program t-shirt, and costs for Citywide, various plaques, Order of the White Buffalo and more.
The last charge is optional, but this is for our Federation Teepee Village. We are asking for $20 donations per family. This is to build a truly wonderful Native American Indian themed village, with one teepee per Nation and one larger Federation teepee. This will be a playground for our children and a centerpiece for our program.
An important note is that everyone must first pay their National and Local dues before you can attend any event. This is primarily for liability reasons. You will not be able to pay for, nor attend a Federation event until you have registered and paid for these two items. As our events unfold, such as Fall Longhouses, we will have those loaded in our registration software as well. This is great news, as everyone can pay online early and our nation chiefs have accurate accounts for those attending, which is a huge assist in all event planning. We want to avoid having someone needing to run around and collect cash at any event, as that takes away from enjoying those fun times.

Timucuan Federation Program Change
After a great deal of discussions amongst the Elders, our Federation Council, Tribe Chiefs and members, we voted and made the change this summer to the Native Sons & Daughters program. This is a momentous day for our Federation, for now we fully embrace our Indian theme and guard the heritage of our program for our kids and those to come. The original Indian Guides & Princesses program was started by Harold Kettner and Joe Friday. Back in 2001, when the Y chose to abandon that logo and theme nationally, the families of those famous originators agreed to start the Native Sons & Daughters program through National Longhouse. In short, it has the same Six Aims and is a perfect match for our needs. I encourage everyone to visit the National Longhouse website, www.nationallonghouse.org and see for yourself the positive change this will be for us.
I am proud of the decision reached by us collectively and the entire council is at work helping to effect this change. Change is difficult word. I want to assure everyone, that we will still be doing the same things with our kids, the same longhouses, the same football & baseball games, the same tribe meetings, the same fun things we have always done. We will change our program patch (very cool new patch), but we gain permanent protection for our Indian theme and control over our own finances. By doing this, we will make this program better for those that follow.
The Y has been notified of our decision and now we move forward. We left on a positive note with our heads held high. Even the Y management agreed that this was a decision for the best for both parties. I am also in ongoing discussions with the Y about still using Camp Immokalee. Provided the cost is reasonable, I know many of our children (to include my own) have fond memories there, so we will do our best to keep that option viable provided they are reasonable about cost.
As events unfold, we will share them through our Federation Council and Tribe Chiefs to everyone, plus also post frequent updates here. We will be adding registration software to our website, which is another huge plus for our program and for running our events. Congratulations to everyone, and as we always and will forever now say...

OWB - Tribute to Top Tribes!
All the tribes who reached the level required to achieve the honor of Order of the White Buffalo took to the beach to celebrate their achievement. Silver Bear and Big Moon cooked up some the grub with help from Big Wolf and his famous BBQ'd chicken and pulled pork.
Every OWB honor winner received a 2011 Sacajawea gold dollar coin and an OWB patch. (For those tribe that did not get patches, send your request to Bull Gator at Malzahn@ClassicLightingUSA.com. There was a lot of effort put in by the braves and princesses in building tribal sand castles. Congratulations to the Seneca, Cherokee, and Blackfeet for placing 1st, 2nd, and 3rd respectively in the sand castle building contest(click here for pictures). There were many noteworthy sand sculptures and everyone who had fun playing in the sand was a winner!
Don't forget to take your 1st 2011/2012 coup points for attending the Federation event and attend summer bowling to get started earning coup for next year so we can all repeat as OWB winners.

Federation Raises over $9000 For Alex's Lemonade Stand
This past weekend, as the sun rose in the sky, many big Braves, young guides and princesses, were making preparations for the days task. Dads, with guides and princesses in tow, armed with coolers, duct tape and yellow street signs, headed for their storefront destinations. The Timucuan Federation's Annual Alex's Lemonade Stand event was, thanks to all of you, a huge success once again. The Great Spirit is always pleased when the families of our great program come together for the benefit of those less fortunate than ourselves. Your efforts produced fantastic results one again.
Thanks to Publix, Pepsi, and, of course, all of you, The Guides and Princesses Program was able to raise $9,024. this year. In reducing our store number to 16, (from 28 last year), we expected to have a considerable drop off from last years total. In fact, we averaged a higher number of donations per store than we ever have. We crossed the $50.000 dollar mark this year. Amazing what a group of dedicated volunteer dads and their children can accomplish!
Special thanks to Mrs. Silver Bear, and Mr. and Mrs. Walking Wolf, (Mac) for their "Goody Bag Angel" roles in our event.
The coloring contest will be judged, and the winners announced in the near future.
Please send any pictures, or stories your children might want to share to:
Timucuan Federation Webspinner, Dave "Shouting Tiger " Denson at webspinner@timucuan.org.
And also, Jennifer Kelly with Alex's Lemonade Stand at jenniferkelly@alexslemonade.org
Little Flower and I tip our headdresses to all of you!

Big How Fellow Timucuan Big Braves, Guides and Princesses!!
The numbers are in, tickets counted, game packages, completed, and patches are in. During our Longhouses and at any chance we had, we asked all of our members to come out and support the program at this years Suns Baseball/Camping in the outfield event this year. As most of you are aware, we were able to host our own Guides and Princesses night this year and we needed to show the Suns we would be able to provide good attendance numbers. Well, 270 game-goers and 179 campers later, (not including Choctaw Federation numbers), the Suns organization was thrilled with the turnout. We have great seats on the third base side. Please be aware that in past years we were, many times, behind home plate, the net provided security from foul balls. Dad's and children need to watch out for one another as foul balls tend to find these seats more often. Bring your gloves! We look forward to seeing all of you on game day, Friday, May, 13th. Tickets, camping passes, food vouchers and patches will be handed out at the upcoming Chiefs meeting, Monday, May 9. Thank you once again for your continued support of our program. BIG HOW!!
Take me out to the baaaall game......

Adventure Guides Join Feeding Frenzy with the Jacksonville Sharks
Saturday, 50 members of the Algonquin and Apache Nations sailed to Seabest field to witness the Jacksonville Sharks feast on the Orlando Predators. This Arena Football League rivalry was billed as "Blood Night" and our young braves were not intimidated at all. Prior to the game, the big braves and families circled the chum grinders (BBQ grills) and prepared a pre-game feast for all. Once Sunfire found the lighthouse signal by using his GPS we were able to gather the group and head to the field. The boys were met with fireworks, explosions and a very vocal crowd. Arena football is a fast paced, score at will exciting version of its big brother. The speed of the Sharks and superior skill of their quarterback propelled them to victory. Just after the Adventure Guides program was recognized over the loudspeakers, Scott Smith, Evan Quirk and Frank Silverio all won official Jacksonville Sharks footballs. As the game concluded and we headed to shore, the boys were exhausted from the battle but left with smiles on their faces.

Big How Shoshone and Iroquois Nations
Our spring longhouse was very well attended and filled with great memories. Tacos and the movie Megamind on Friday night. On Saturday we played on the Zipline, in the pool and afterward the princesses filled Meninak Hall with tasty desserts that they hand-made in the afternoon. The faces of our princesses as we announced the winners and handed out banquet dessert patches was truly a beautiful memory. For the fathers who got to see that, you know exactly how happy and excited your daughters were. With that said, they were even more joyous when they got to dig in and eat sweets to their hearts content.
The Sacred Fire was...truly spectacular. Silver Bear and Big Moon broke arrow with their princesses and passed the headdresses to Sparrowhawk and Red Wolf. Our Elders, Golden Bear and Big Wolf honored us in the Sacred Circle by officiating a solemn Broken Arrow ceremony that was packed with Big Braves and Princesses. The finishing touch was when Little Flower saw her broken walking stick descend from the skies, remade and in her hands again. The Great Spirit watches over us all, always. Big How!

Big How Seminole and Sioux Nations
Well the Seminole and Sioux Nations gathered the first weekend in April. What a fantastic longhouse! The princesses and braves who attended had a fantastic time. Friday night was capped off with Funnel Cakes prepared by the Great Chiefs, Kicking Buffalo, Silver Bear and Big Moon. Many thanks for their help in filling the little bellies of our princesses and big braves. The Great Spirit blessed us with fantastic weather. So nice that we were even able to open the swimming pool, burrrrr! Princesses in the two nations also took part in an archeological dig. Many treasures were uncovered. There were ancient arrowheads, Indian pottery pieces, beads, gold and many other items for the taking. The big braves were so excited they even jumped in to assist with "the dig".
Saturday night was the sacred fire ceremony. One tribe, the Mighty Cheyenne, went broken arrow. It was a very touching ceremony. Your Mighty Chief Kicking Buffalo had to use some of the feathers on his headdress to sop up the tears. My princess, Soaring Bird and I along with the Seminole Nation Chief, Snoring Bear and his princess, Laughing Bear want to say thank you for all of the wonderful gifts given to them by all of the tribes. I can only hope that you enjoyed yourself as much as I did.
BIG HOW!!!

The year is passing by quickly and our Spring Longhouses begin next weekend. Suzie Q. Miller Family Campout at Crooked River State Park
This past weekend, over 200 members of the Timucuan Federation saddled their ponies and headed out of state to attend a tribal gathering called, The Family Campout. This year's event was named in honor of Suzie Q. Miller. Suzie has been a staunch supporter of the father/child program for many years. She has participated in numerous state wide campouts and is always a willing participant to fill any capacity needed. This past year, the great spirit called Suzie home to assist him and our Federation is forever blessed to have met this wonderful women.
After the tribes set up their tipis, a tour of the campsites showcased that the variety of buffalo meat was indeed impressive. The great spirit blessed our gathering as he raised the temperature more than 10 degrees warmer than the local forecasters had predicted. Saturday was filled with a wide variety of activities. Egg Relay, Egg Toss, Putt-Putt golf, tug of war and chilli competition.
Some of our champion performers were as follows: {8 and under} Guides Egg Toss, Braden "Little Elk" from Kickapoo; Princess Egg Toss, Riley Bowman "Running Dog" from Cherokee; Princess Putt Putt, Sophia Davis "Arctic Fox" from Seneca. In the 9 and over category: Guides Egg Toss, Danny Malzahn "Little Bull Gator" from the Mohawks: Guides Putt Putt, Evan Quirk "Growling Bear" from the Trailblazers; Princess Putt Putt, Louise Kelly from the Crow tribe and from the Egg Toss, Leslie Moore "Red Fox" from the Crow tribe.
After a moving tribute to Suzie Q. by Golden Bear and Big Wolf, a special commemorative plaque was presented to Rodney "Wildhorse" Miller. Individual event awards were then presented to the children during our evening award ceremony.
I strongly encourage any family member who was unable to attend, to log onto the state wide website at www.2011statepowwow.info for information on the upcoming event. In closing, many feathers were earned by our event organizer, Scott "Flash of Lighting" Smith, our War games organizer, Frank "Sunfire" Silverio and the mighty Chippewa big braves for battling to an exhaustive victory over the Yuma big braves in the dads tug of war championships.

2010 Ray Potts Summer Bowling Results
This summer we had over 230 guides, princesses and trailblazers join their dad’s for some scotch doubles bowling. Over the course of the summer you could see hugs and high fives galore exchanged all down the alley for a good shot.
My princess “Little Tiger” bowled her first strike on the third week of the summer. This was a joyous occasion and her reward was a basket of fries that seemed to be a favorite of many bowlers.
Along with the good times we had some great scores posted over the course of the summer.

Joint Tribe Outing to Ichetucknee Springs
This past Saturday, over 50 members of the Timucuan Federation crawled out of their tipi’s at sunrise to begin the journey to Ichetucknee Springs in Lake City. After sharing Buffalo meat at Cracker Barrel, the caravan, lead through the forests by Flash of Lightning and Flaming Eagle, safely made the journey to the springs.
Each member gathered their inner tubes and headed out for the adventure. One by one, the guides, princesses, big braves (and moms) jumped into the river and were greated with the first tingling of the cool waters. Almost two hours of peace and tranqulity followed as everyone saw the untouched, natural beauty of the river.
The tribes then huddled back in the parking lot and dined on hamburgers, hot dogs and subs. The decision was made to add to the experience and everyone headed to Blue Springs. This natural attraction was a hit as the humidity continued to climb as the day wore on. Each swimmer was greated with cool 72 degree crystal clear water.
As the group headed back to town, everyone had a good time and was able to experience something very unique to North Florida. Discussions were held about making this an annual “kick off” event. As Sunfire stated, “it's just another opportunity for me to spend quality time with my children”, which happens to be the theme of our entire program.
